The Therapressure Protocol, also known as the Wilbarger Protocol, is a therapeutic approach designed to address sensory defensiveness. Sensory defensiveness is a misinterpretation by the nervous system, where regular sensory inputs are flagged as dangerous or harmful. This causes the body to go into a state of high alert or ‘fright, flight or fight’ mode. This can result in disruptions to sleep, social isolation and emotional difficulties.
The Therapressure Protocol®, sometimes known as the Brushing Program, provides specific, organising sensory input to assist people with sensory-defensiveness to integrate sensory information in a manner that, over time, results in a decrease in sensory defensiveness.
Therapresure Protocol at home
At MoveAbout Therapy Services we work with families to implement a home-based intensive implementation of the Therapressure Protocol® as appropriate. For home-based implementation, we provide families with the necessary training and instruction, and consultation on complimentary sensory diet activities, to ensure the greatest chance for improvement in the areas identified as of concern for the family.
It is important to note the therapressure protocol should only be used at home once you have been instructed by your therapist on how to carry it out because incorrect use of the Therapressure device (or another brush) may be harmful.
