The Alert Program® teaches self-regulation for kids. Its methods are intended to be taught in group or school settings. This helps encourage self-awareness and provides techniques for children to use when they feel their ‘engine‘ is not running at the right speed. It also encourages social interaction with similar peers in a group setting.
Self-regulation for kids
Self-regulation is a child’s ability to understand what is happening around them and manage their social interactions, behaviour and emotional reactions.
The Alert Program uses the analogy of a car’s engine to help children understand their own bodies and the feelings that impact them. Just like a car’s engine, a child can be too slow, too fast, or just right for the situation. Sometimes it is the situation that will determine what speed is “just right.”

Joining an engine group
Through the Alert Program®, your child will learn about self-regulation. This involves tasks like getting ready in the morning, concentrating at school, and settling down at night. Having comfort in routine can support self-awareness and self-regulation.
Our therapists will let you know when a suitable engine group is available for your child. These groups run typically three or four times per year and consist of 12 group sessions. Groups are formed with the right social match in mind because it’s important to have a well balanced dynamic. If self-regulation and routine have been a challenge in your household, the Alert Program might be a good next step. If you’d like to find an engine group for your child, contact us to find the next suitable group.
